When searching for an Australian Cobberdog puppy, families will often see breeders describe their dogs as health tested, DNA clear or vet checked.
These phrases may sound reassuring, but they do not all mean the same thing.
Responsible health testing involves several different assessments because no single test can provide a complete picture of a breeding dog’s health. DNA screening is important, but it cannot assess the physical condition of the hips, elbows or heart. Likewise, a routine veterinary appointment does not replace breed-relevant genetic testing.
Before choosing a puppy, buyers should understand which tests have been completed, what the results mean and whether those results have been independently verified.
Why Health Testing Matters
Every dog can potentially develop a health condition, regardless of breed, pedigree or breeder.
Health testing cannot guarantee that a puppy will never experience illness. Its purpose is to help breeders make more informed decisions and reduce avoidable risks within future generations.
A responsible breeder considers:
The health of each individual breeding dog
The results of relevant genetic and physical assessments
Health patterns within the wider pedigree
The strengths and limitations of the proposed breeding pair
Genetic diversity and relatedness
Whether a dog should be bred at all

What Health Testing Does the ACS Require?
Before an Australian Cobberdog is accepted for breeding within the Australian Cobberdog Society, the breeder is expected to provide evidence of breed-relevant health assessments.

Breed-Relevant DNA Testing
DNA testing examines specific genetic variants associated with inherited conditions.
A sample is usually collected using a cheek swab or blood sample and submitted to a recognised laboratory.
The report may describe each result using terms such as:
Clear
Carrier
At risk
Affected
One copy
Two copies
The exact wording varies between laboratories.
What Does “Clear” Mean?
A clear result generally means the tested dog does not carry the particular genetic variant examined by that test.
However, it does not mean the dog is clear of every possible health condition.
DNA panels only test for the specific variants included in the panel. They cannot rule out:
Conditions for which no DNA test currently exists
Unidentified genetic risks
Conditions influenced by multiple genes
Illness caused by injury, environment or ageing
Structural problems such as poor hip or elbow development
This is why the statement “DNA clear” should never be treated as a complete health assessment.
Can a Carrier Be Used for Breeding?
A carrier result does not automatically mean that the dog is unhealthy or must never be bred.
For many recessively inherited conditions, a carrier can be safely paired with a dog that has tested clear for that same condition. The breeder must understand the inheritance pattern and ensure the mating cannot produce affected puppies.
Removing every carrier from a breeding population may also unnecessarily reduce genetic diversity.
The important question is not simply whether a dog carries a variant. It is whether the breeder understands the result and uses it responsibly when selecting a mate.
DNA Identity and Parentage
DNA profiling may also be used to establish an individual dog’s genetic identity.

As with hip assessment, elbow evaluation is separate from DNA testing.
A dog may have clear DNA results but still have poor elbow structure. Conversely, a dog with a genetic carrier result may have physically healthy elbows.

Cardiac Screening
Cardiac screening assesses the dog’s heart for signs of abnormality.
The ACS requires regular cardiac assessment, which commonly begins with veterinary auscultation. During this examination, a veterinarian listens to the heart using a stethoscope and checks for unusual sounds, rhythms or murmurs.
Auscultation is an important screening tool, although it cannot detect every possible heart condition.
Where a concern is identified, further investigation may be recommended, such as:

Electrocardiography
Specialist cardiac assessment
Repeat examination
Heart health can change over time. This is one reason regular screening remains important throughout a breeding dog’s active life rather than being completed only once when the dog is young.
Annual Veterinary Health Assessment
Breeding dogs should receive ongoing veterinary care, not only pre-breeding testing.
An annual health assessment allows the veterinarian to examine the dog’s general condition and identify changes that may affect its welfare or suitability for breeding.

Eyes and ears

A dog that passed its original health tests is not automatically suitable to continue breeding indefinitely.

What Should Puppy Buyers Ask to See?

Hip-evaluation result: Ask which assessment method was used and what the result means.
Elbow-evaluation result: Confirm that the elbows were assessed separately from the hips.

Current veterinary health assessment: Confirm that health monitoring continues while the dog remains active in the breeding program.
A responsible breeder should be willing to show the reports and explain them in plain language.
Why the Dog’s Identity Matters
Health results are only useful when they can be confidently connected to the correct dog.
Check that the reports identify the dog using details such as:
Registered name
Microchip number
Registration number
Date of birth
DNA profile or laboratory identification
A call name alone—such as Charlie, Bella or Teddy—is not enough to reliably connect a certificate to a particular breeding dog.
Verified identity helps protect puppy buyers, breeders and the integrity of the registry.
Testing Both Parents Is Essential
Testing only one parent is not a complete breeding health program.
Both the mother and father contribute genetic material to every puppy. Both should therefore meet the health requirements relevant to the breed before the mating takes place.
This remains important when:
The sire belongs to another breeder
Frozen semen is used
The dog lives interstate or overseas
The breeding dog lives with a guardian family
The mating introduces new genetics
The breeder planning the litter should assess all available health information for both dogs, regardless of who owns them.
Health Testing Is Not the Same as a Health Guarantee
Even when both parents have excellent results, no breeder can guarantee that every puppy will remain free from health concerns throughout life.

Do not have a reliable screening test
Are influenced by many genes
May not appear until later in life
Are affected by nutrition, growth or injury

Health testing reduces uncertainty and improves decision-making. It does not remove all biological risk.
Be cautious of any breeder who promises a completely disease-free puppy or suggests that testing makes health problems impossible.
Why Pedigree Information Also Matters
A breeder should not assess each dog in isolation.
Pedigree records allow breeders to consider:

Will not provide copies of results
Cannot explain the results
Claims every dog is completely clear of all disease
Uses certificates that do not identify the dog
Has tested only one parent
Says hip and elbow evaluation is unnecessary
Relies only on a routine veterinary check
Continues breeding a dog despite significant health concerns
Dismisses questions about health or pedigree
Uses very old results without ongoing health monitoring
One missing document may have a reasonable explanation, but buyers should receive clear answers before making a financial commitment.
What ACS Verification Means
ACS Approved Breeders submit the required health information for their breeding dogs.
The Society verifies that the documentation provided corresponds with the dog being registered and that the required assessments have been completed before the dog is accepted into the active breeding population.
This provides an additional layer of accountability.
It does not replace the breeder’s responsibility to make ethical breeding decisions, and it does not guarantee the future health of every puppy. It does mean that required health testing is documented rather than relying solely on advertising claims.
Questions to Ask Your Breeder
Before choosing an Australian Cobberdog puppy, ask:
What health testing has the mother completed?
What health testing has the father completed?
Which hip and elbow evaluation systems were used?
Have both dogs completed a recent veterinary health assessment?
Has the ACS verified both parents for breeding registration?
Will the litter and each puppy be registered?
Are there any known health concerns within either pedigree?
A responsible breeder will appreciate that you are taking the decision seriously.
Health Testing Protects More Than One Litter
Health testing is not only about producing one litter of puppies.
Each breeding decision contributes information to the future of the Australian Cobberdog population. Accurate testing and honest recordkeeping allow breeders to identify patterns, avoid preventable combinations and preserve healthy genetic diversity over time.
When puppy buyers support breeders who complete and disclose appropriate health testing, they help strengthen expectations across the entire breed community.

Confirm the breeder’s current registration
Identify both parents
Ask to see their health results
Confirm that the litter will be registered
Make sure your puppy will receive an individual pedigree
The goal is not to find a breeder who promises that nothing could ever go wrong.
The goal is to choose a breeder who tests carefully, keeps accurate records, discusses risk honestly and makes decisions with the long-term welfare of the dogs and the breed in mind.
